What are PLA Lined Biodegradable Coffee Cups Made of?

What are coffee cups made of?

Most people think that disposable printed cups wholesale are made of 100% paper. Not entirely true. While the main ingredient of a coffee cup is paper which forms the walls and base of the cup, it is no ordinary paper. It is actually lined with a coat of plastic which prevents hot liquid from penetrating through the cup and turning it useless.

Traditionally, disposable coffee cups were used by hospitals where maintaining personal hygiene and stopping the transfer of germs through shared utensils was of utmost importance. However, with an increasing takeaway culture the concept spread to fast food chains like McDonalds. Disposable coffee cups were useful since the customer could carry their drink outside and consume it at their own pace.

Why does a coffee cup pose problem?

paper cups wholesale are traditionally lined with PE (Polyethylene), which is a petrochemical based coating of plastic used to prevent leakage in a disposable paper cup. PE plastics are made of oil which is generated from a non-renewable resource, fossils. In addition, extraction of oil leads to environmental degradation. Processes such as fracking (using high water pressure to extract oil from the deepest pools of Earth) has been a primary cause of groundwater pollution upon which many communities depend and acts as their source of drinking water.

Although PE is a recyclable material, most coffee cups end up in landfills and are never recycled. Also, very few waste management companies specialize in recycling coffee cups as they need to separate the plastic lining from paper in order to successfully recycle.

Is there a solution to this problem?

YES!

Biodegradable  cups wholesale present themselves as a solution to the problem of plastic waste. Unlike traditional coffee cups, Bio Cups are lined with a PLA plastic coating. PLA (Polylactic Acid) plastic is made of plant-based renewable resources such as sugarcane starch and bamboo. As a result, PLA plastic is often hailed as an eco-friendly packaging solution for fast food restaurants, cafes and food businesses.

On the recycling front, the good news is- PLA lined Bio Cups are compostable!

That's right, these cups degrade and dissolve back into the soil after being exposed to certain conditions.

However, there is still a problem.

Many waste management composting facilities are unequipped in processing PLA plastics. Only a handful of facilities specialize in composting of degradable plastics.

In addition, due to lack of knowledge around PLA plastics and the question over whether they are recyclable or compostable, many bio cups are currently being packed into landfills. Or worse, they end up in standard recycling facilities and contaminate the traditional PE plastic pile rendering it unfit for recycling.

In light of the compostability of PLA Bio cups and it's advantage of being plant-based, we cannot deny that it is a positive step in environmental protection. Our efforts of separating PLA plastics from PE plastics will create benefit in future as the composting infrastructure grows and awareness increases.

Environmental protectionis something everyone should do, but blindness is more let us hate, many ignorant people blindly follow, in fact, no knowledge is more terrible. Why Can’t You Recycle Paper Coffee Cups?

These days, paper cups have a bad rap. That’s because they’re designed to be used only once before getting tossed out.

We go through something like half a trillion disposable paper cups&paper bowls each year, or about seventy cups for every person on the planet. And to meet hygiene requirements, most of them are made out of virgin materials, i.e. real trees. Not recycled paper. Doesn’t sound very sustainable, does it? Well, that’s because it isn’t.

Unlike most paper items, paper cups can’t be recycled because they’re actually coated in plastic—as little as five percent per cup. That’s why they’re able to hold liquid without leaking all over the place. It’s also why they don’t get broken down into pulp and turned into recycled paper. While some communities do recycle materials like paper coffee cups, they’re very rare. And only getting rarer. Unfortunately, there’s just not much of a market for them, which means soda fountain cups,PLA double wall&single wall paper cups, and those little sippy cups your dentist gives you all end up getting landfilled.

Not all paper cups are coated in plastic, though the vast majority are. Less frequently, some are actually lined in wax. Determining which is which can be difficult, though, which is why we advise treating them the same way. If, however, you’re certain that your cup is coated in wax, you might be able to compost it, either at home or through your community’s organics program, should they have one. You can check to confirm whether they’re accepted using our app.

Though you probably can’t recycled customized take away biodegradable paper cups in your community, plastic lids and the corrugated sleeves your coffee comes in are probably fair game. You could also reduce the seventy cups or so you contribute to the global share by exploring alternatives that are more sustainable. There are plenty of places where you can buy reusable cups, including your local coffee shop.

In the meantime, some of the best and brightest are looking at tackling the single-use paper cup problem. Freiburg, a city in Germany, has an interesting solution: the Freiburg Cup. It’s a hard-plastic reusable cup that’s supplied to participating businesses by the city and it only costs customers a €1 deposit. Even Starbuck’s is getting in on the action. Recently, they partnered up with Closed Loop to develop a recyclable,PLA coated compostable paper cup.

Until that happens, remember: though they’re paper, in most municipalities, paper cups go in the trash!

Why Paper Coffee Cups Are the Future?

If you’re in a coffee shop, chances are you’re using a paper coffee cup. Increased awareness of environmentally friendly solutions and the health impact of packaging products propelled the usage of paper coffee cups.

Research shows paper cups usage will continue rising. Why? Paper Cups Safety

There have been concerns over the safety of paper coffee cups and their environmental impact. Several studies cite the difficulty in recycling paper coffee cups as the main challenge. They point paper cups have inner plastic linen, which is unsafe and hard to decompose, thus not a viable packaging solution.

However, the suggestion that paper cups are unsafe is inaccurate. Paper cups comprise different inner film coating. They can either be PLA or PE coated.

PLA raw materials, comprise sugar-cane and maize starch, thus contain no BPA or harmful chemicals that can expose customers.

A good deal of food packaging items now comprise PLA as the main by-product because of its safety and affordability.

PE or polyethylene derives from fossil fuels and contains harmful chemicals; therefore, it might contaminate foods in packages.

Environmental Impact

PE or 100% polyethylene-coated cups are hard to recycle because they can cause machine clogging. They, however, can get recycled through a unique process after separation from other recyclables.

Meanwhile, PLA coated paper coffee cups are 100% compostable. Meaning, they can go directly to compost pits and leave no environmental impact.

So, the right paper coffee cups are now PLA coated. Why? PLA comes from corn-starch, which is readily available in many nations. Meaning, the resulting packaging products from PLA are cheap and perfect for businesses and customers.

So, in a few years to come, expect a ban of PE coated paper cups. However, the governments agree disposable paper cups are not a challenge but a recycling mechanism is the gap. Proof is the planned introduction of coffee cup recycling points across England to counter coffee cups infiltration into landfills.

All moves suggest two things; disposable coffee cups recycling is the way forward for business harmony. Also, the primary solution lies in supporting production of PLA products and PLA coated paper coffee cups.

Changing Consumer Preferences

Survey results showed customers consider the recyclability of products when buying any product.

In the survey, 83% of 6000 respondents from Asia, Europe, and North America indicated it is essential for companies to design eco-friendly paper containers.

It is, therefore, outright, the current generation of consumers value principled brands over their insensitive counterparts.

While price and affordability still play a significant role in purchase decisions, products with a less environmental impact always carry the day.

Businesses that adopted sustainable packaging and eco-friendly products are already reaping the benefits of respecting market dynamics. Such businesses include coffee shops and outlets using biodegradable paper coffee cups.

“Enlightened” customers no longer go for coffee in outlets unresponsive to the environment. Also, they don’t use unfriendly coffee cups.

The food and product packaging industry is ever changing since the “go-green” awareness started. Businesses that remain focused and spot market changes in coffee cups and food packaging will always have the upper hand.

Paper Cups Impact Sales

Retailers of reusable paper cups and disposable paper cups marked an increase in sales in the year 2018. Coffee shops and coffee outlets using personalized customized PLA coffee cups cite an increase in sales resulting from increasing customers opting for safe coffee cups and food packages.

With the growing impact of paper coffee cups, switching to other alternative could be difficult as paper cups have become mainstream. Just consider how difficult it has been to eliminate single-use plastic despite its adverse effects.
